When we launched the VIA Mobile360 D700 in June 2019, the dash cam market was hardware centric. All the key functions of these devices such as video capture, recording, and playback were carried out locally. If you wanted to edit the footage to make a video clip of an accident your vehicle was involved in for an insurance claim, for example, you had to transfer it to your PC using an SD card or some other form of physical storage. Analyzing the video to learn more about driving habits or to identify near misses was an even more complex and cumbersome process limited only to the most committed experts and enthusiasts.
With the VIA Mobile360 D700, one of our key design goals was to beef up the local processing capabilities of the device so that it could simultaneously capture HD video footage using two cameras as well as carry out in-cabin FCW (Forward Collision Warning), LDW (Lane Departure Warning), and DMS (Driver Monitoring System) AI safety functions. Choosing the appropriate cloud platform for your Edge AI device deployments is a major strategic decision for any company. Do you invest in building your own private cloud? Or do you adopt one from AWS, Microsoft, Google, and a host of other third-party providers? Each path has its own advantages and disadvantages. Only you can decide which one provides the best fit for your organization.
Our objective with the VIA Mobile360 family is to make edge-to-cloud fleet deployments as simple and convenient as possible, no matter which cloud platform you decide on. At the most basic level, this means that we have enabled support for all the most popular cloud interfaces and protocols in the SDKs that we provide with each VIA Mobile360 system or device. No Edge AI device is an island. To maximize the value of the data every device collects, events it records, and alerts it issues, you will need to integrate them with the cloud so that you can build up a complete picture of what is happening across your operations and identify usage and behavioral patterns that need to be addressed.
We have been given a glimpse of the potential benefits that you can reap from integrating Edge AI devices with the cloud with the development of our demonstration VIA Fleet Cloud Management Portal for the VIA Mobile360 D700 AI Dash Cam.
As this article explains, even with fairly limited baseline functionality the portal enables you to monitor the status of your vehicles in real-time, access and tabulate relevant statistics such as total hours driven, distance driven, and fuel consumption, and take a deep dive into the details of a particular trip. And that’s just for starters – the potential features and applications that can be built on top of it to meet the specific needs of your business are simply enormous. It’s great to be back in Kyoto for my third visit to the STS Forum! I came down from Tokyo on the Bullet Train this morning after attending our VIA Focus Day for our Japan channel partners yesterday.
One of the key messages delivered by our GM, Epan Wu, at the event was the focus we are placing on delivering solutions that use AI-IoT, computer vision, and edge-to cloud technologies to boost vehicle and operational safety. Two of the most recent platforms we have created this year are the VIA Mobile360 Forklift Safety Kit for logistics and warehouse deployments and the VIA Mobile360 Mining Kit for harsh environments.
