Contemporary figures in the Analects of Confucius: Zhuan

Zhuan (僎) was the steward of Gongshu Wenzi, a highly respected minister of the state of Wei. Gongshu was so impressed with Zhuan’s abilities that he allowed him to be promoted to the same position as him in the duke’s court. Since the vast majority of high-ranking officials in ancient China would consider it a humiliation to be equal in rank with a former subordinate, this was a highly unusual and generous action on the part of Gongshu Wenzi.
