Notes from the field: bringing AI to life with the VIA Pixetto vision sensor

As Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in our daily lives, it’s never been more important for schools worldwide to equip their students with a theoretical and practical knowledge of how the technology works and how it can be applied.

Our goal with VIA Pixetto, which we officially launched yesterday, is to make it easy for teachers to bring AI to life and fun for students to learn about the subject. To give you an idea of the possibilities the platform enables for teaching and learning AI, we’ve already posted a number of sample tutorials on the VIA Pixetto website and will continue to add to them in the future.

As I mentioned earlier this week, we are also working with National Taiwan Normal University and the New Taipei City government to promote AI learning in the area’s schools. This initiative provides us with an exciting opportunity not just to put VIA Pixetto through its paces but also to understand how to further optimize the platform for teachers and students alike.

Bringing AI to life

VIA Pixetto is a full HD vision sensor with a Micro USB 2.0 port, a Micro SD Card slot, a microphone, and a Grove connector for Arduino, micro:bit, and Raspberry Pi boards and peripherals. It also comes with an integrated suite of tools that make it easy for students to understand the basic principles and technologies underpinning AI and ML and apply them in their own AI vision, maker, and robotics projects. These include:
• Pre-built object, shape, color, face, and handwriting recognition models that students can use to configure the vision sensor;
• Beginner-friendly coding Blocks integrated with the popular Scratch platform to teach students basic programming;
• Accelerated machine learning platform for students to create new models for their projects
• Support for advanced coding using Python and TensorFlow Lite
