I’m back in Shanghai for the first time since the start of the Lunar New Year. The sky is blue, the sun is shining, and the cherry blossoms are blooming. Who needs springtime in Paris?
I’m here to take part in the 9th China International New Energy and Intelligence Vehicle Forum (NEV China 2019), which takes place tomorrow and Wednesday. At the event we will be talking about our future development plans for VIA Mobile360 autonomous driving platforms, not to mention demonstrating the “Little Lion” unmanned delivery vehicle from our partner Aisimba featuring our technology.
I sometimes find it difficult to believe that we only entered the auto market just over three years ago with our first VIA Mobile360 In-Vehicle Surround View system. It’s been, please excuse the pun, a very exciting ride since then as we’ve rolled out an ever-expanding family of systems integrating the latest ADAS, Surround View, and DMS (Driver Management System) technologies, and become involved in a number of challenging projects such as the development of one of the world’s first autonomous buses.
Given that I’ve never owned a car in my life, nor even driven one in over thirty years, I’ve found it fascinating to learn about the dynamics of the market and the impact that rapid advances in AI, Computer Vision, IoT, and battery technologies are having on it. And although I still have a long way to go before I get fully up to speed on what is happening, it has already become clear to me is that the rapid rate of change the market is currently experiencing will only get faster and more disruptive in the years ahead.
