I wish some bright startup would come up with a cure for jet lag. Or an established pharmaceutical giant for that matter. I don’t really care which. I’d be more than happy to pay a premium for one. I Ching: the quest for the middle way
One of the best ways of deepening your understanding of China is to read the Book of Changes. There are plenty of excellent English-language translations and commentaries available, so language is no barrier. My favorites include “I Ching: The Essential Translation of the Ancient Chinese Oracle and Book of Wisdom” by John Minford, “The Living I Ching: Using Ancient Chinese Wisdom to Shape Your Life” by Ming-Dao Deng, and “The I Ching, or, Book of Changes,” by Richard Wilhelm.

When I first started working in the tech industry, I would always go to the US in order to get a taste of what was in store for the future. These days, I only have to take a much shorter flight across the Taiwan Straits. What a change in less than thirty years! In those days, you couldn’t even get a direct flight from Taiwan to China and had to transit through Hong Kong.

Green shoots of facial recognition technology sprouting
In terms of the I Ching, the facial recognition market is at the sprouting stage represented by Hexagram 3 (屯/zhūn). Having been invented in the mid-sixties, it’s only been in the past few years that the green shoots of the technology have started to push through the hard surface of the ground and emerge in the sunlight.

Mobile World Congress Shanghai was even bigger and brasher than CES Asia a couple of weeks before. Naturally, there was a much stronger focus on the latest and greatest smart phones at the show, but overall the main themes were pretty much the same. Yes, AI and AR are about to take over the world as the industry packs yet more hot new applications and features into their devices to fuel the upgrade cycle.
