I Ching Diary: true joy

I Ching Hexagram 58: lake

Joy: This was the prognosis of my I Ching reading this morning in the form of Hexagram 58 (兌/duì). This is comprised of two lake trigrams, the idea being that when they come together there is much less chance of the water in them drying out and the future of the land and community that depend on them is assured.

In the same way, when a meeting of two great minds takes place the synergies immediately begin to kick in and everyone shares in the bountiful wisdom that gushes forth from them.

The changing line, line 3, does, however, caution against overexcitement. True joy only comes from having strong inner values in tune. It will not be achieved by indulging in the transient pleasures of the flesh. Don’t allow yourself to be diverted from the true path.

Hexagon 43 (夬/guài), meaning resolution, retains the upper lake trigram and replaces the lower one with the trigram for heaven. The last days of winter represented by the single yin line at the top of the hexagram are disappearing and the warm and sunny days of summer are approaching in the form of the five yang lines beneath it.

I Ching Hexagram 43: resolution

A major breakthrough is on the horizon, but only if you don’t become complacent or lapse into bad habits. Indeed, now is the time to look deep inside yourself and root out any negativity or weaknesses that are holding you back. The future is bright if you stick to the right path. Don’t risk snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.
