Underqualified

子曰:「孟公綽為趙魏老則優,不可以為滕薛大夫。」
Confucius said: “Meng Gongchuo is more than qualified to serve as the steward for the Zhao and Wei families, but is not qualified to serve as a minister in the states of Teng and Xue.”

Meng Gongchuo was a contemporary of Confucius and a big wheel in his home state of Lu. Confucius is having a dig at him here by saying that while he is qualified to work as a household manager for powerful families such as the Zhao and Wei, he is unfit to become an official for the rulers of even the smallest and weakest countries.

No doubt Meng himself had a very different opinion!
