Zizhang asked about the way of the good man. Confucius said: “He does not follow the path others have trodden, but he does not enter the inner chamber either.”
In Confucius’s eyes, Zizhang is not setting his sights high enough with this question.
To him, it is not enough simply to for a man simply to be good; he also have to have the ability and dedication to cultivate his mind in order to “enter the inner chamber” of moral understanding and enlightenment.
That is the goal that Confucius wants Zizhang, and indeed all his disciples, to aim for.
