In danger in Kuang

子畏於匡,顏淵後。子曰:「吾以女為死矣!」曰:「子在,回何敢死!」
Confucius was in danger in Kuang. Yan Hui had fallen behind. When they were finally reunited, Confucius said: “I thought you were dead.” Yan Hui said: “While you are alive, how would I dare to die?”

I get the poignant irony of Yan Hui’s words. I just can’t help thinking that they’d be better suited to a romantic novel or soap opera.I wrote about the incident in Kuang in which Confucius was nearly killed by the enraged locals who mistook him for a notorious outlaw called Tiger Yang (楊貨) here.
