Arrogant and mean

子曰:「如有周公之才之美,使驕且吝,其餘不足觀也已。」
Confucius said: “Even if someone has all the outstanding talents of the Duke of Zhou, if he is arrogant and mean all his other qualities are not worth looking at.”

Character is more important than ability to Confucius. To be truly successful, a person has to set a good example and contribute more to society than he takes from it. Instead of arrogance and meanness, a successful person should show humility and generosity.

The fabled Duke of Zhou was Confucius’s role model and hero. He lived during the tenth century BC and allegedly presided over the golden age of good government.
