Sheer luck

子曰:「人之生也直,罔之生也幸而免。」
Confucius said: “A man’s survival depends on his rectitude. If he leads a crooked life, it will only be out of sheer luck that he survives.

While there’s no arguing with the basic sentiment that Confucius expresses here, there is little evidence to support his claim that people who lead a “crooked life” only survive out of “sheer luck”.

Perhaps I am being a tad cynical, but there seem to be plenty of less than scrupulous individuals who seem to get by just fine.
