I’ve swapped the excitement and grandeur of Beijing for the rather more prosaic pleasures of a suburb of Wuxi in Jiangsu province where I’m attending a conference on the Internet of Things.
Developing the IoT is a major part the China government’s plans to promote greater levels of innovation in the economy. Judging from what I have seen and heard in Beijing during my last couple of visits there, great progress has already been made in enabling mobile payments systems through services such as WeChat and Alipay – a critical step in driving the proliferation of the IoT.
The next major challenge is expanding its scope further into industrial, healthcare, logistics, and transportation applications. With the vast majority of startups focused on consumer-centric O2O services, this will necessarily extensive government and corporate investment to get the ball rolling.
I’m looking forward to hearing more about the plans to make this happen over the next couple of days.
