A final gnashing of teeth

子曰:「居上不寬,為禮不敬,臨喪不哀,吾何以觀之哉?」
Confucius said: “How can I bear to even contemplate a person who lacks tolerance when in high office, reverence when performing the rites, and grief when in mourning?”

Confucius closes Book 3 of the Analects with a final gnashing of teeth. Despite his best efforts to promote the restoration of his beloved rites, civilization continues to collapse around him.

It’s a miracle it ever survived……
