Livable cities

I see that Melbourne has just been selected by The Economist Intelligence Unit as the world’s most “livable” city for the fifth year in a row.

It is of course very easy to second-guess the results of such surveys, but they do provide a useful benchmark for cities to compare themselves with others and identify areas of improvement. A spot of healthy competition can be a good thing in driving up overall standards as long as it doesn’t descend into a beauty contest.
