I can’t say I really like its name, but the Cool Docks development on the Shanghai South Bund is a pleasant place to hang out in – with plenty of coffee shops, bars, and restaurants to (as the complex brochure says) “satiate all your senses”.
Nearby is the ultra-chic Waterhouse Hotel housed in a grungy 1930s building that once served as a headquarters for the Japanese Army. Don’t let its external appearances deceive you: this is one of the most expensive hotels in the city.
With only nineteen rooms, it’s also the most exclusive. Even if I could afford its extortionate rates, I doubt I would be qualified to stay in it.
