A fitting conclusion

Although some people question whether this is the final chapter of the Daodejing, it certainly provides a fitting conclusion to it – neatly summing up the most important principles we should follow as we make our way through life.

I’ve greatly enjoyed translating the text, but this is just the start. Now comes the hard part of polishing the words and diving deeper into them to get a better understanding not just of their meaning but also their application in the modern world.

You can read my complete translation draft here.

「信言不美,美言不信;善者不辯,辯者不善;知者不博,博者不知;聖人不積,既以為人己愈有,既以與人己愈多。天之道,利而不害;聖人之道,為而不爭。」
Truthful words are not beautiful.
Beautiful words are not truthful.
Good people are not argumentative.
Argumentative people are not good.
People who have true wisdom do not show off their learning.
People who do not show off their learning have true wisdom.
The wise never hoard.
The more they do for others, the more they have.
The more they give to others, the greater their abundance.
The Way of Heaven is to benefit and not to harm.
The way of the wise is to act without striving.
