Maker culture is taking off in Taiwan in a very big way judging by the huge crowds at Maker Faire Taipei 2015 today.
There were plenty of great exhibits to capture people’s attention ranging from 3D printers and CNC machines to IoT development platforms and robots, as well as an excellent program of speeches and presentations.
The highlight for me was the thought-provoking presentation from the Taiwan representative of Seeed Studios on the challenges of reengineering the supply and production chain to facilitate the small-lot manufacturing of IoT devices. While some encouraging progress has been made, taking a product from prototype to volume production is still a highly complex and expensive process. A huge amount of innovation and investment will be required to break through this bottleneck.
