Shuinandong Smelter

Looming above the rock formations at Nanya is this massive old fortress-like structure built into the hillside.

This is known as the Shuinandong Smelter and it was where all the ore dug out from the nearby mines was sorted, smelted, and refined. Built in 1933 by the Taiwan Metals Mining Corp, the building was 13-stories high and employed thousands of people in its heyday.

Now it stands empty, bearing mute testament to the death of the area’s once vibrant mining industry.
