Thanks to its low costs and scenic locations, Beitou (北投) became a center for Taiwan moviemaking in the 1970s – though the output was more cheesy melodramas rather than Ang Lee masterpieces.
The Hot Springs Museum has a quirky poster showing the main ingredients for writing your very own Taiwan-style tearjerker. Judging by the soap operas on local TV, not to mention the news programs, the genre remains just as popular now as during the Beitou moviemaking heyday.
