At the heart of the Keelung Miaokou Night Market (基隆廟口夜市)is the Taoist Dianji Temple (奠濟宮). This is the largest temple in Keelung, and features a shrine to the local deity Kaizhang Shengwang (開漳聖王) of the people of Zhangzhou (漳州), who migrated from Fujian Province during the latter part of the 19th century to found the city.
The temple has endured quite a turbulent history in its 120 years or so of existence, including being moved to a couple of different sites, being partially blown up during the Sino-French War in 1884 as a result of the careless handling of explosives, and suffering fire damage when Japanese troops were stationed inside it.
The current structure was first built in 1924, but even that was bombed by the Americans in during the Second World War, and underwent a series of additional restorations, the most recent of which took place in 1997.
The temple is a lively and colorful place, and an integral part of any visit to the Miaokou Night Market.
