The Bronze Goat Taoist Temple (Qing Yang Gong/青羊宫) is the oldest surviving temple in Chengdu with a history that dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and was purportedly built on the site where Laozi (老子) taught the Dao De Jing (道德經) to his discipline Ying Xi.
Not surprisingly given the temple’s long history, none of the buildings from its early days have survived. Most of the current ones are restorations from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), another period when the temple flourished.
In recent years, the temple has been revived once again both as a place of worship and as a destination for tourists. With its magnificent buildings and peaceful atmosphere, it’s a wonderful place to spend a relaxing afternoon in.
