Bitter experience

子曰:「事君盡禮,人以為諂也。」
Confucius said: “When someone serves his lord in full accordance with the rites, people regard him as a sycophant.”

Confucius is no doubt speaking from bitter experience here. For all his eloquence, his attempts to promote a return to traditional values were met with indifference at best, though probably more often with ridicule and cynicism.
