True Authenticity


My hotel in Shanghai had none of the faux industrial chic of the Waterhouse, but the nearby stores along East Beijing Road packed to the gills with all manner of factory automation equipment, components, and cables more than made up for it. 


Walking past the storefronts every day gave a truly authentic picture of the city’s daily life that not even the edgiest “reimagination” of the past could possibly provide.


The place I stayed at was the Bund Riverside Hotel: clean, comfortable, and excellent value at $80 per night.
